A tablet press compresses powder or granulate into tablets of controlled weight, thickness and hardness by forcing it between an upper and lower punch inside a die. Single-punch presses produce one tablet per cycle for R&D and small batches; rotary presses carry multiple stations on a rotating turret and reach production rates in the hundreds of thousands of tablets per hour.
